Melania and Taborga Wines have begun their northward expansion into the Northeast through a distribution agreement with Davine Wine Selections based in Bowdoinham, Maine. Davine will distribute Melania and Taborga wines exclusively throughout the state of Maine. The well-respected wines are produced by Viña Lomas de Cauquenes in the Maule Valley of Chile, one of two Fair Trade FLO certified vineyards and the first organic certified vineyard in Chile. Melania and Taborga wines have received high praise for their innovative and vibrant label and received a Silver Medal in design (www.worldwinecompetition.com). Melania "Coleccion Especial" has recently received numerous high accolades from the likes of the Beverage Tasting Institute and the Florida International Wine Challenge, which precedes the Miami Wine Fair and was the sole Chilean wine nominated for an award. The wines have also become a value leader having just received the award of "Best Chilean Cabernet" in the World Value Wine Challenge 2006 for Melania Cabernet Sauvignon.
Melania and Taborga wines can currently be found in Wild Oats (Portland), RSVP, Royal River Natural Foods, Haggerty's Market (Yarmouth), West End Grocery (Portland), Bath Natural Foods Market, Tess's Market (Brunswick) and Claytons Market and Café (Yarmouth) to name a few. FLO Cert Gmbh, Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International, is the worldwide Fairtrade Standard setting and Certification organization based in Bonn, Germany. "FLO guarantees that products sold anywhere in the world with a Fairtrade label marketed by a National Initiative conforms to Fairtrade Standards and contributes to the development of disadvantaged producers and workers." (fairtrade.net) In the EU, there are many retail stores that cater to the sale of Fair Trade products with a certification initially made popular by the coffee industry. As they have expanded into other food and commodity products, the ideals of what Fair Trade can offer consumers have increased in popularity.
Melania and Taborga wines were introduced into the United States by C&C Imports, LLC in December 2005, and are widening distribution rapidly in anticipation of the holiday season. Their varietals offer newcomers an introduction to the nuances of each varieties best characteristic while keeping the prices well under the $10 range in addition to being able to compete in ratings with wines many times their price.
