Love triangles, classic biblical tales and '70s wrestlers all make their way into James Hold's hilarious, new satirical short story collection, "Remember the Aloe, Moe: Book Two in the Out of Texas Series" (ISBN 9780595441242, iUniverse, 2007).
This vast and varied collection of short stories follows J, a radioactive cat-turned-wrestler, through a series of outrageous adventures that together form an overall novel. "Remember the Aloe, Moe" is the sequel to Hold's first book, "Out of Texas," which introduces J, a Siamese cat who uses his radioactive powers to become human. After his transformation, J makes a living as "J-man," a traveling wrestler who is fast, but also small and scrappy, so his fights tend to have a distinct David versus Goliath quality.
In "Remember the Aloe, Moe" J finds himself stuck in Texas, while the love of his life--an exotic Filipino princess--has left him to return home to her crown. J decides to enter a monumental, championship wrestling tournament, in hopes that the media coverage of the event will reach his beloved princess. In the title story of the collection, however, J meets Josie--a reincarnated mosquito--who falls hopelessly in love with J, creating an unlikely love triangle reminiscent of the Old Testament story of Jacob, Leah and Rachel.
"Anybody who likes to laugh should find something to enjoy in my book," Hold says. "Everything is there--Texas, religion, wrestling, rock 'n' roll, cats, cartoons, bad puns, mad scientists."
"Remember the Aloe, Moe" follows J on his wide-ranging adventures as he searches for acceptance and true love. J's many, zany escapades include a wild west tale with a Bob Dylan soundtrack, a story about a book of forbidden knowledge known as the "Text Arkana," and an apocalyptic encounter with the Easter Bunny. "Remember the Aloe, Moe" comes to a very memorable and hysterical ending with a Perry Mason style court murder trial that's sure to leave readers doubled-up with laughter.
