Canadian comedians stand-up in support of Canadian Satellite Radio
Publish Date : 10/24/2004 12:26:00 PM Source : Onlypunjab.comTeam
Have you heard the one about the Canadian comedian making it big on U.S. radio? Probably not. Why? Because Canadian comics have had to work the nightclub circuit and hope for TV coverage or a Tonight Show appearance to get noticed - until now. On Wednesday, October 27 at Yuk Yuk's in Ottawa, some of Canada's leading comedians - including host Don Kelly and comedians Rick Currie and Rick Kaulbars - will take to the stage for a stand-up performance in support of Canadian Satellite Radio's (CSR's) proposal to launch the Laugh Canada channel using satellite radio's digital quality sound technology.
Canadian Satellite Radio was founded in 2002 to provide subscription- based satellite radio service to rural and urban Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast in both English and French. "The opportunity to bring great Canadian comedy to listeners across the continent is a dream come true," said Mark Breslin, founder of Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club. "This is revolutionary technology. The kind of national support and devoted audience that satellite radio can deliver is phenomenal. As an industry that is starved for the kind of exposure medium that exists in the U.S. and the U.K. this particular format will be a massive boost for comedians across this country." In all, more than 20 comedians will take to the stage and perform stand- up comedy in a show of support for CSR and its proposed 'Laugh Canada' channel. Local Ottawa talent includes Mike Beatty, Ben Miner, Steve Dillon, Wafik Nasralla, Andrea Jensen and more. Through its partnership with XM Radio in the U.S., CSR has unprecedented access and opportunity to increase exports of Canadian culture and music to the U.S. marketplace. This represents a massive opportunity for Canadian artists, especially independents - to be heard in the world's largest consumer market. Canadian musicians, singers and songwriters are already benefiting from satellite radio with increased royalties and profile in the U.S. market. CSR's proposal has broad-based support among Canadian comedy groups. "Just For Laughs is excited about the potential of Canadian Satellite Radio," said Bruce Hills, Chief Operating Officer, Just For Laughs. "It can be a great launch pad for Canadian talent into the North American market, and is an important step in creating a new and progressive model of Canadian comedy talent development." "This is a tremendous opportunity to expose and promote Canadian culture, and increase the exposure of singers, musicians, songwriters, and comedians, especially our independent artists and niche specialists," said Stephen Tapp, CSR president and COO. "Satellite radio facilitates the full expression of the Canadian voice and our diversity. We want to bring news, comedy and music to Canadians coast-to-coast-to-coast." CSR is currently in the application process for the provisioning of subscription-based satellite radio services with the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
